The History of P90X - Tony Horton’s Vision

The P90X Workout is a very popular fitness program that was developed by exercise instructor Tony Horton. During the early part of his career, Horton had created numerous workout programs. Then, over time, he developed what would be the P90X Workout, which is still one of the hottest fitness programs around.

From the Start

It was in 1998 that Horton along with fellow fitness trainer Debbie Siebers developed what they called the Great Body Guaranteed. Then Horton created the Power90 In-Home Boot Camp. This was a forerunner to what would become the P90X Workout. This first program used strength training and cardiovascular workouts. This beginning would be the start of something big for Horton and for those who would adhere to his program.

Extreme Fitness

It was in 2002 that Carl Daikeler, the CEO of Beachbody, asked Horton to create a new workout program for those who were already to a degree fit. There was nothing on the market for those people.

Horton set to work. It took him two years to develop what would become the P90X Workout. He did so by consulting with numerous fitness experts and through experimentation as he worked with various disciplines that resulted in his “muscle confusion” exercise technique that utilized a dozen different workouts that tested participants in various different ways.

Testing, Testing!

Horton tested his workout with various groups each of which adhered to the program for 90 days. During this time he refined and adjusted his workout program. Throughout the process filmmaker Ned Farr, who Daikeler had hired in 2002 to document Horton’s work, created an ongoing documentary. Those films were played on Beachbody’s website each month. Farr used a documentary style that featured raw footage. That style is still used in Horton’s infomercials today.

The P90X Workout Premieres

In 2004, the first of various manifestations of the P90X Workout came out. The infomercial included various people who had successfully used Horton’s program in the documentary style that would help to make the P90X workout and its creator famous. The P90X Workout went on to be come Beachbody’s biggest selling product.

In that time, Horton developed a total of six different products connected to his original concept of muscle confusion, including Power 90, Power 90 Master Series, P90X, P90X+, P90X One-on-One, and P90X:MC2.

P90X Workout Elements

The P90X Workout includes the following:

  • A series of 12 daily exercise units
  • A full nutrition plan
  • Workout gear for the program
  • A series of supplements to be taken

When these four elements are combined together, the workout program is said to be most effective.
